Vimshottari Dasha: Planetary Periods in Vedic Astrology

One of the most distinctive tools in Vedic astrology is the dasha system: a sequence of planetary periods across your life. The most widely used is the Vimshottari dasha, a 120-year cycle that begins from the Moon's position at your birth.

The sequence and lengths

Nine planetary periods, or mahadashas, follow in a fixed order:

  • Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17.
  • Together they add up to 120 years.

Where your cycle begins

Your starting period is ruled by the planet that rules your Moon's nakshatra. How far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra decides how much of the first period had already passed at birth. Someone born with the Moon halfway through Chitra, ruled by Mars, begins with about three and a half years of Mars.

Soul Atlas calculates this from the sidereal Moon with the Lahiri ayanamsa and lists each period's dates. Period lengths use the Julian year of 365.25 days; some traditions use slightly different year lengths, which shifts dates a little.

Reading a period

Each period is traditionally coloured by its planet: a Jupiter period by learning, teachers and expansion; a Saturn period by patience, structure and hard work; a Venus period by relationships, comfort and art. Where that planet sits in your chart adds detail.

Periods are subdivided into antardashas (sub-periods) in the same order, starting with the main planet itself.

A reflective approach

Dashas are part of Vedic astrology's timing tradition, but Soul Atlas presents them as themes to reflect on, not predictions. Looking back at past periods and noticing which themes felt true is often the most illuminating way to start.

Common questions

How long is the Vimshottari cycle?
120 years, divided into nine planetary periods of between 6 and 20 years.
How is my first dasha decided?
By the ruling planet of your Moon's nakshatra at birth, and how far the Moon had moved through it.
Do I need a birth time?
Usually yes. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, which shifts period dates by months.
What are antardashas?
Sub-periods within each main period, following the same sequence of planets.
