Sade Sati: Saturn's 7½ Years in Vedic Astrology

Sade Sati (literally 'seven and a half') is the period when Saturn passes through the three signs centred on your Vedic Moon sign. Because Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, it lasts roughly seven and a half years. It's one of the best-known transits in Jyotish, and one of the most feared. Here's what it actually is.

How Sade Sati is worked out

Find your Moon sign (rashi) in the sidereal zodiac. Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters the sign before it (the 12th from the Moon), peaks while Saturn crosses the Moon's own sign, and ends when Saturn leaves the sign after it (the 2nd from the Moon).

Your Vedic Moon sign is often one sign earlier than your Western one, so check it in a sidereal chart rather than assuming.

Saturn's sidereal dates, calculated

Using Lahiri ayanamsa and the same astronomy library behind Soul Atlas charts, Saturn entered sidereal Pisces on 30 March 2025. It moves into Aries on 3 June 2027, returns to Pisces on 20 October 2027, and re-enters Aries for the main period on 24 February 2028. It reaches Taurus on 8 August 2029, slips back to Aries on 5 October 2029, and enters Taurus for good on 17 April 2030 (all UTC). Other software using a different ayanamsa may differ by a few days.

  • Moon in Aquarius: final phase now, ending as Saturn settles into Aries in 2028.
  • Moon in Pisces: the peak phase now.
  • Moon in Aries: the first phase now.
  • Moon in Taurus: begins as Saturn enters Aries (June 2027, then from February 2028).

What the tradition says

Classical texts associate Sade Sati with pressure, responsibility, delay and hard lessons, but also with maturity and lasting results from honest effort. Many Jyotishis stress that the effect depends on the whole chart: Saturn's own placement and strength, the Moon's condition, and the running dasha. A well-placed Saturn is often said to bring structure rather than hardship.

It is not a curse and doesn't predict specific events. It's a traditional framework for reflecting on discipline, patience and what you're building.

Reflections for the period

  • What responsibilities have become mine, and which do I need to put down?
  • Where would steady, unglamorous effort make the biggest difference?
  • What am I learning about my own limits, kindly?

Common questions

Am I in Sade Sati?
If your sidereal Moon sign is Aquarius, Pisces or Aries, Saturn is in the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from it during 2025–2027, so by the traditional definition, yes.
How long does Sade Sati last?
About seven and a half years, though Saturn's retrogrades can stretch the start and end.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. Classical and modern astrologers say results depend on the whole chart. Many describe it as a period of maturing, not punishment.
Does Soul Atlas calculate my Moon sign?
Yes. The free Vedic chart gives your sidereal Moon sign and nakshatra from your birth date, time and place.
