Lagna: Your Ascendant in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It's the starting point of the whole chart: it sets the houses and, with the Moon, is one of the two most important points in a reading.

Lagna versus Western Rising
The Lagna and the Western Ascendant are the same point in the sky, measured on different zodiacs. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which today is about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. So for many people the Lagna falls one sign earlier: a Western Libra Rising might have a Virgo Lagna.
Houses from the Lagna
Vedic charts usually use whole-sign houses: the Lagna's sign is the 1st house (bhava), the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Each house covers an area of life, such as the 2nd for wealth and speech or the 7th for partnership.
The Lagna lord
The planet ruling your Lagna sign is your Lagna lord (lagnesh). Where it sits, and how strong it is, is read as a key to the whole life. For a Virgo Lagna the lord is Mercury; for a Cancer Lagna, the Moon. Jyotish uses only the seven visible planets as sign rulers.
Why the time must be exact
The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, faster for some signs than others. Without a reliable birth time, Soul Atlas shows the Lagna as not available, or tells you if it could fall in two signs.
Common questions
- Is Lagna the same as the Ascendant?

- Which ayanamsa does Soul Atlas use?
- Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the most widely used in India.
- What is the Lagna lord?
- The planet ruling the sign of your Lagna. Its placement is a central theme in a Vedic reading.

- No. It changes about every two hours.
