Venus and the 7th House: Love in Your Birth Chart

When people ask what their chart says about love, astrologers look at a handful of placements: Venus, Mars and the Moon, and the 5th and 7th houses. None of them tell you who you'll meet or when. What they offer is a language for how you love, what you need and what you look for.

Venus: how you give and receive affection

Venus describes what you find attractive and beautiful, and how you express affection. Venus in Taurus is traditionally sensual and steady; in Gemini, playful and talkative; in Scorpio, intense and private. Its house shows where those themes tend to play out.

Mars: desire and pursuit

Mars describes desire, how you go after what you want and how you handle conflict. Reading Venus and Mars together gives a fuller picture: one is about attraction and receptivity, the other about pursuit and action.

The Moon: emotional safety

Long-term relationships often depend less on attraction than on whether both people feel emotionally safe. The Moon describes what you need to feel at home with someone, which makes it one of the most useful placements for reflecting on partnership.

The 5th and 7th houses

The 5th house is traditionally romance, flirting, play and pleasure. The 7th house, which begins at the Descendant, is committed one-to-one partnership. The sign on each house, any planets inside it and the planet that rules its sign all add detail.

If a house is empty, which is very common, it isn't a sign of anything missing. Its sign and ruling planet carry the story instead.

Questions to sit with

  • Venus: when have I felt most cared for, and what was the other person actually doing?
  • Mars: how do I ask for what I want from someone close to me?
  • Moon: what would a partner need to know to help me feel at home?
  • 7th house: which qualities do I look for in a partner, and which do I already bring?

What astrology can't tell you about love

Astrology can't tell you whether someone is your soulmate, whether a relationship will last or when you'll meet someone. Anyone who promises that is offering certainty the tradition doesn't have. What it can do is help you understand your own patterns more kindly.

Common questions

Which planet rules love in astrology?
Venus is the main planet of love and affection, with Mars (desire) and the Moon (emotional needs) also important.
What is the 7th house?
The house of committed partnership, beginning at the Descendant, opposite your Rising sign.
My 7th house is empty. Is that bad?
No. Most charts have several empty houses. The sign on the house and its ruling planet still describe its themes.
Can my chart tell me when I'll meet someone?
No. Soul Atlas describes traditional themes for reflection and doesn't predict relationships or timing.
