Astrocartography: What Your Planetary Lines Mean

Astrocartography, sometimes called astro mapping, takes your birth chart and spreads it across a world map. Each line marks the places where a planet was exactly on the horizon or overhead at your birth. It's a beautiful way to think about places you love, have lived or are curious about.

How the lines are calculated

At your moment of birth, every planet was rising somewhere on Earth, setting somewhere, directly overhead somewhere and directly underfoot somewhere. Astrocartography draws those four lines for each planet:

  • Rising (ASC) line: where the planet was rising on the eastern horizon.
  • Setting (DSC) line: where it was setting in the west.
  • Culminating (MC) line: where it was at its highest point, overhead.
  • Anti-culminating (IC) line: where it was at its lowest point, underfoot.

What the four angles traditionally mean

The four lines echo the four angles of a birth chart. The rising line is linked with self and how you show up. The setting line is linked with partnership and other people. The MC line is linked with career, reputation and public life. The IC line is linked with home, family and roots.

The planet adds its own colour: a Venus line is associated with beauty and affection, a Jupiter line with growth and generosity, a Saturn line with responsibility and structure, a Mars line with drive and energy.

Why birth time is essential

The Earth turns about one degree every four minutes, so an error in birth time shifts every line east or west, by roughly one degree of longitude for every four minutes. Without a reliable birth time Soul Atlas doesn't draw a map.

Reading places reflectively

The tradition associates themes with places. It doesn't predict that you'll find love in one city or success in another, and Soul Atlas never frames it that way. A more useful approach is to look at places you already know: where did you feel most yourself? Do any lines pass nearby?

Lines also have influence that most astrologers describe as fading with distance, often within a few hundred kilometres, though there's no agreed rule.

Common questions

What is an astrocartography line?
A line on the map where a planet was exactly rising, setting, overhead or underfoot at your moment of birth.
Will moving to my Venus line bring love?
Soul Atlas describes traditional associations only. It doesn't predict what will happen in any place.
How accurate do I need my birth time to be?
As accurate as possible: every four minutes of error moves the lines by about one degree of longitude.
Do the lines curve?
The MC and IC lines run north to south. The rising and setting lines curve, because of the angle of the zodiac to the horizon at different latitudes.
