Your Vedic Moon Sign (Rashi) and Why It Matters
Western horoscopes are usually organised by Sun sign. In India, people are more likely to know their Moon sign, their rashi. In Jyotish the Moon is the mind, and many readings, from daily forecasts to the timing of life periods, start from it.

Why the Moon matters so much
Jyotish treats the Moon as the mind and emotional life, and so as central to how you experience everything else. Transits such as Sade Sati are counted from the Moon sign, and the Moon's nakshatra (lunar mansion) at birth sets the order of your Vimshottari dasha periods.
Why it may differ from your Western Moon
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, currently about 24° behind the tropical one. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a quarter days, so for most people the Vedic Moon sign is one sign earlier than the Western one, but not always.
The twelve rashis
- Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer)
- Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio)
- Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), Meena (Pisces)
Do you need a birth time?
The Moon moves about 13° a day, so on days when it changes sign or nakshatra, a birth time is needed. Without one, Soul Atlas only names your rashi or nakshatra if it stays the same all day, and says when it could be either.
