Don't Know Your Birth Time? What You Can Still Learn

Many people don't know when they were born, or only know roughly. That doesn't mean astrology has nothing to offer. A surprising amount can be calculated from your date and place alone, and it's better to know clearly what's reliable than to read a chart built on a guess.

What you can still calculate

  • Your Sun sign, almost always (unless you were born on the day the Sun changed sign).
  • Mercury, Venus, Mars and the outer planets' signs, and most aspects between them.
  • Your Moon sign, unless the Moon changed sign that day.
  • Your full numerology chart.
  • Most of your Kabbalistic chart: your planets' spheres on the Tree of Life and your Sun path.
  • Your Vedic Sun and most planetary signs.

What needs a birth time

  • Your Rising sign and Midheaven, which change roughly every two hours.
  • The houses, which start from the Rising sign.
  • Your Human Design chart, which can change with a few minutes' difference.
  • Your astrocartography lines.
  • Your Vedic Lagna, nakshatra (sometimes) and dasha dates.
  • Whether you were born before or after sunset, for your Hebrew birthday.

Why we don't guess

Some sites quietly use noon when no time is given. That produces a full-looking chart, but the Rising sign and houses are likely to be wrong. Soul Atlas would rather show 'not available' and explain why. If the result could be either of two values, such as a Moon sign, we say so.

Finding your time

Check for a long-form birth certificate, hospital records, baby books or family letters. In some countries, the local register office can supply a time. A rough time, such as 'early morning', can still narrow things down.

Common questions

Can I use 12:00 noon if I don't know my time?
You can, but the Rising sign and houses would likely be wrong. Soul Atlas marks them as not available instead.
Is my Sun sign reliable without a time?
Yes, unless you were born on a day the Sun changed sign, which happens once a month.
Can I get a report without a birth time?
Yes. Report sections that need a time are clearly marked as not available rather than filled in.
What is birth time rectification?
Estimating a birth time from life events. It's an interpretive practice and results vary between astrologers.
