Born on the Cusp? How to Know Your Real Sun Sign
If you were born around the 19th to 23rd of a month, you may have been told you're 'on the cusp' and a mix of two signs. In astrology, though, the Sun is always in one sign or the other. Here's how to know which.

Sign dates move every year
Horoscope columns print fixed dates, such as Sagittarius from 22 November. In reality the Sun enters each sign at a precise moment that shifts by up to a day or so from year to year, because the calendar year and the Sun's cycle don't line up exactly. In 2026, for example, the Sun entered Sagittarius on 22 November at about 08:00 UTC.
Why time and place matter
If you were born on a sign change day, your Sun sign depends on whether you were born before or after that moment. The moment is fixed in UTC, so your birth time and time zone both matter. Someone born at 7am in London and someone born at 7am in Los Angeles on the same day could have different Sun signs.
What 'cusp' really means
In technical astrology, a cusp is the starting line of a house, not a blend of two signs. A Sun at 29° of one sign is still that sign. Some astrologers do say a very late or very early degree can carry a flavour of the neighbouring sign, but that's interpretation, not a separate sign.
Check it properly
A calculated chart gives the exact degree of your Sun. If you don't know your birth time and were born on a change day, Soul Atlas will tell you your Sun sign is uncertain rather than picking one.
Common questions
- Can you be two signs at once?
- No. The Sun is always in one sign. 'Cusp' blends are a popular idea, not part of traditional astrology.
- Why does my sign differ between websites?
- Fixed date tables don't account for the year, time or place. A calculated chart does.
- What if I don't know my birth time?
- If you were born on a sign change day, your Sun sign can't be certain without it. Soul Atlas shows both possibilities.
- What is a house cusp?
- The boundary where a house begins in your chart, which depends on your birth time and place.
