Astrology Journaling Prompts for Self-Reflection
The most useful way to work with a birth chart isn't to ask what will happen, but to ask better questions about what already is. Journaling turns symbols into something personal. Here are prompts for the main parts of your chart.

Before you start
Have your chart open. Choose one placement per session, write for ten minutes without editing, and notice what surprises you. If a description doesn't fit, that's information too.
Sun, Moon and Rising
- Sun: when do I feel most alive and most like myself?
- Moon: what do I need on a hard day, and do I let myself have it?
- Rising: how do I tend to enter a room, and is that how I want to?
Venus and Mars
- Venus: what did I find beautiful this week?
- Venus: how do I show love, and how do I like to receive it?
- Mars: what am I angry about, and what does that anger want to protect?
Saturn and Jupiter
- Saturn: where am I being asked to grow up, and where am I being too hard on myself?
- Jupiter: where do I feel generous and hopeful? Where might I overdo it?
The houses
Pick the house with the most planets in your chart and ask: how much of my energy goes into this area of life? Then pick an empty house and ask: what does this area of life look like for me right now, and is that enough?
With the sky as it moves
Each New Moon, write an intention for the house where it falls in your chart. Each Full Moon, write about what has come to light. The Weekly Sky, Soul Atlas's free Monday email, lists the week's Moon phases to help.
Common questions
- How often should I journal with my chart?
- Whatever feels sustainable. Many people like once a week, or at each New and Full Moon.
- Do I need to know astrology well?
- No. Start with your Sun, Moon and Rising signs and one prompt at a time.
- What if a description doesn't fit me?
- Write about why. Disagreeing with a placement can be as revealing as recognising it.
- Does Soul Atlas offer journaling prompts?
- Yes. Buyers of a Soul Atlas report can use guided journaling, which offers reflective questions to write with.
