What Is a Stellium in Astrology?

A stellium is a cluster of planets gathered in one sign or one house of your birth chart. It's one of the first things astrologers notice, because it shows where a chart's energy is concentrated.

How many planets make a stellium

Most astrologers count three or more planets in the same sign or house; some require four, or three not counting the Moon's nodes. Many count only the ten planets (Sun to Pluto) and leave out points such as the Ascendant.

Because Mercury and Venus always travel near the Sun, a stellium of Sun, Mercury and Venus in one sign is common. One that includes slower outer planets is rarer and often shared by people born in the same period.

Sign or house?

A sign stellium colours the style: three planets in Capricorn suggests a strongly practical, ambitious temperament. A house stellium points to an area of life: three planets in the 10th house suggests a focus on career and reputation. In the whole-sign houses Soul Atlas uses, a sign stellium is always also a house stellium.

How it's traditionally read

A stellium is read as an emphasis: that sign's qualities or that house's themes are central to the life. Astrologers also look at the sign's ruling planet, since it becomes very important to the chart, and at the empty houses opposite, which aren't 'missing', just less emphasised.

Finding one in your chart

Count the planets in each sign in your chart. If three or more share a sign, you have a stellium. For the house, you need your birth time.

Common questions

Is a stellium rare?
Three planets in one sign is fairly common, especially with the Sun, Mercury and Venus. Four or more is less common.
Is a stellium good or bad?
Neither. It's an emphasis: a strength and sometimes an imbalance.
Does the Moon count in a stellium?
Yes, the Moon counts as one of the planets in most approaches.
Do I need my birth time?
For a sign stellium, usually not. For a house stellium, yes.
