Your Moon Sign: Emotional Needs in Astrology

If your Sun sign is the part of you that shines outwardly, your Moon sign is the part that needs looking after. Many people find their Moon sign describes them more closely than their Sun sign, especially at home and with the people they're closest to.

What the Moon describes

The Moon is traditionally linked with emotions, instincts, comfort and memory: what helps you feel safe, how you respond when you're tired or hurt, and what home means to you. It's also linked with how you were cared for and how you care for others.

The Moon by element

  • Fire Moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): feelings arrive quickly and want expression, enthusiasm, warmth.
  • Earth Moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): comfort comes from routine, the body, practical care and steady ground.
  • Air Moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): feelings are processed by talking and thinking, with a need for space and connection.
  • Water Moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): deep, intuitive feelings, sensitive to atmosphere and to others' moods.

Why the Moon is sometimes uncertain

The Moon moves about 13° a day and changes sign every two to three days. If it changed sign on the day you were born, your Moon sign depends on your birth time. Soul Atlas checks this and tells you if your Moon sign could be either of two signs.

The Moon in Vedic astrology

In Vedic astrology the Moon sign, or rashi, is central, and its nakshatra (one of 27 lunar mansions) is one of the most important details in the chart. Because of the sidereal zodiac, your Vedic Moon is often one sign earlier than your Western Moon.

Questions to sit with

  • What do I reach for when I need comfort?
  • What does a good day at home look like for me?
  • How do I like to be cared for when I'm unwell or low, and do the people close to me know?

Common questions

What is the difference between Sun and Moon signs?
The Sun describes your core identity and vitality; the Moon describes your emotional needs and instincts.
Do I need a birth time for my Moon sign?
Usually not, but if the Moon changed sign on your birthday, yes. Soul Atlas tells you when it's uncertain.
Why is my Vedic Moon sign different?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, currently about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology.
Is the Moon important in love?
Many astrologers think so: it describes what you need to feel emotionally safe with someone.
