What does Mercury represent?

The mind, communication, learning, writing, trade and short journeys.

Can Mercury be two signs from my Sun?

No. It's never more than about 28° from the Sun, so it's in your Sun sign or a neighbouring sign.

What does Mercury retrograde at birth mean?

Traditionally an inward, reflective or unconventional thinking style. About one person in five is born with it.

Do I need a birth time?

Usually not for the sign, only for its house or if Mercury changed sign that day.

Always close to the Sun

Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so your Mercury sign is always your Sun sign or the sign just before or after it. It spends anything from about two weeks to two months in a sign, depending on its retrogrades.

Mercury through the signs

Aries: quick, direct, decisive.
Taurus: slow, steady, practical thinking.
Gemini (Mercury's own sign): curious, fast, versatile.
Cancer: intuitive, memory-rich, emotional.
Leo: expressive, confident, storytelling.
Virgo (its own sign and exaltation): precise, analytical, detailed.
Libra: balanced, diplomatic, sees both sides.
Scorpio: probing, private, investigative.
Sagittarius: big-picture, philosophical, frank.
Capricorn: structured, strategic, realistic.
Aquarius: original, objective, inventive.
Pisces: imaginative, poetic, intuitive.

Dignity

Traditionally Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo and is exalted in Virgo. It's considered in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and in fall in Pisces. These describe how easily Mercury's analytical style flows, not intelligence.

Mercury at work

Mercury matters for study and work, especially communication, writing, teaching and trade. Its house and aspects add detail, which is why Mercury appears in the Career Report.
