Human Design
Human Design Types Explained, and How They're Calculated
Human Design is a modern system, introduced by Ra Uru Hu in 1987, that blends astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and the chakra system into a single chart called a bodygraph. Its most famous idea is that there are five types, each with its own strategy for making decisions. Here is what they are and where they come from.

How a bodygraph is calculated
A Human Design chart uses two moments. The Personality side is calculated for your birth. The Design side is calculated for the moment, roughly three months earlier, when the Sun was exactly 88° of arc behind its birth position. Soul Atlas finds that moment precisely rather than estimating it.
The positions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, the lunar nodes and the planets at both moments are mapped onto 64 gates, one for each I Ching hexagram, arranged around the zodiac. When both gates at either end of a channel are active, the channel is defined and the two centres it joins are coloured in. Your type comes from which of the nine centres are defined and how they connect.
The five types
- Generator: a defined Sacral centre, the source of sustainable energy. The strategy is to respond: to wait for something to respond to rather than initiating from the mind.
- Manifesting Generator: a defined Sacral connected to the Throat. Fast, multi-passionate energy. The strategy is also to respond, then inform others before acting.
- Projector: no defined Sacral and no motor connected to the Throat. Projectors are described as natural guides who see others clearly. The strategy is to wait for the invitation.
- Manifestor: a motor centre connected to the Throat without a defined Sacral. Described as initiators. The strategy is to inform before acting.
- Reflector: no defined centres at all. Rare and highly sensitive to their surroundings. The strategy is to wait a lunar cycle, about 28 days, before major decisions.
Why your birth time matters
The Moon moves quickly through the gates, and a change of a few minutes can sometimes move a planet into a different gate or line and change a channel. If your birth time is unknown, Soul Atlas shows the Human Design chart as not available rather than guessing at a type that might be wrong.
Holding it lightly
Human Design is a spiritual system, not a personality science. Its value lies in the questions it raises: do you trust your responses? Do you rush to initiate? Try the strategy for a few weeks and notice what changes, if anything.
Common questions
- Which Human Design type is the most common?
- Generators and Manifesting Generators together are by far the most common. Reflectors are the rarest.
- What is the 88° Design calculation?
- The Design side of the chart is calculated for the moment the Sun was 88° of ecliptic longitude before its birth position, about 88 days before birth.
- Can I find my type without a birth time?
- Sometimes the type would be the same at any time that day, but not always. Soul Atlas only shows a type it can calculate reliably.
- Is Human Design related to astrology?
- Yes. It uses the same planetary positions as astrology, mapped onto the 64 I Ching gates instead of being read by sign.
