Human Design Profiles: The 12 Line Combinations
Alongside type and authority, your Human Design chart has a profile: two numbers such as 2/4 or 5/1. It's often described as the costume you wear, or the role you tend to play with others.

Where the numbers come from
Each gate in Human Design has six lines, like the six lines of an I Ching hexagram. Your profile combines the line of your Personality Sun, calculated for your birth, and the line of your Design Sun, calculated for the moment the Sun was 88° earlier. Personality comes first: a 3/5 has a 3rd-line Personality Sun and a 5th-line Design Sun.
Only twelve combinations occur: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6, 4/1, 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.
The six lines
- 1 Investigator: needs a secure foundation of knowledge.
- 2 Hermit: natural gifts that others call out; needs time alone.
- 3 Martyr: learns through trial and error, discovering what doesn't work.
- 4 Opportunist: networks, friendship and influence through people close to them.
- 5 Heretic: others project expectations onto them; practical solutions.
- 6 Role Model: a life in three phases, maturing into an objective, lived wisdom.
Reading your profile
The first line describes your conscious sense of yourself; the second something more unconscious that others may notice before you do. A 1/3 is described as building knowledge and testing it in life; a 4/6 as influencing through relationships and gradually becoming a role model.
Accuracy
The Sun moves through a line in about a day, so your Personality line is usually certain from a birth date alone, but near a line boundary a birth time helps. Soul Atlas calculates both Suns precisely and shows the profile only when it's reliable.
Common questions
- What is my Human Design profile?
- Two numbers from the lines of your Personality Sun and Design Sun.
- How many profiles are there?
- Twelve, from 1/3 through to 6/3, because only certain line pairs can occur.
- What does 'Martyr' mean in the 3rd line?
- It's a traditional name for learning through experience and trial and error. It isn't about suffering.
- Is the profile more important than type?
- Most Human Design teachers start with type, strategy and authority, then profile.
