The 9 Human Design Centres, Defined and Open

The bodygraph, the diagram at the heart of a Human Design chart, has nine centres. Some are coloured in (defined) and some are white (undefined or open). Which centres are defined decides your type and authority, so understanding them is the quickest way into your chart.

The nine centres

  • Head: inspiration, questions, mental pressure.
  • Ajna: thinking, processing, opinions.
  • Throat: speaking, expressing and taking action.
  • G centre: identity, direction and love.
  • Heart (Ego): willpower, worth and promises.
  • Sacral: life force, work energy, response.
  • Solar Plexus: emotions, moods and feeling over time.
  • Spleen: instinct, intuition, health and timing in the moment.
  • Root: pressure, adrenaline and drive.

How a centre becomes defined

Each centre holds a set of gates, and each gate corresponds to a slice of the zodiac. At your birth moment, and at the 'Design' moment when the Sun was 88 degrees earlier, the Sun, Moon, nodes and planets activate particular gates. When both gates at the ends of a channel are activated, the channel is complete and the two centres it joins are defined.

A gate on its own doesn't define a centre. That's why two people with similar planets can have different charts.

Defined versus open

Human Design describes defined centres as consistent: the way you reliably operate in that area. Undefined or open centres are where you take in and amplify other people's energy, and so where you can be most influenced and also most perceptive. Neither is better.

The system's advice for open centres is to notice conditioning, such as trying to prove your worth in an open Heart or rushing decisions under Root pressure.

How centres decide your type

No defined centres makes a Reflector. A defined Sacral makes a Generator, or a Manifesting Generator if a motor connects to the Throat. Without the Sacral, a motor connected to the Throat makes a Manifestor; otherwise the chart is a Projector.

Common questions

How many centres are in Human Design?
Nine: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen and Root.
What are the motor centres?
The Sacral, Heart, Solar Plexus and Root. A motor connected to the Throat is what makes a Manifestor or Manifesting Generator.
Is an open centre a weakness?
No. In Human Design it's a place of sensitivity and potential wisdom, where you experience others' energy strongly.
Can my centres change if my birth time is wrong?
Yes, a channel can complete or not depending on minutes. Soul Atlas checks and tells you if your defined centres are stable.
