Elements and Modalities: Fire, Earth, Air and Water

Every sign of the zodiac has an element and a modality. Counting them across your chart gives a quick sense of its overall temperament, before you read a single placement in detail.

The four elements

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): enthusiasm, courage, inspiration.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practicality, patience, the body and the material world.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): ideas, communication, connection.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feeling, intuition, emotional connection.

The three modalities

Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): starting things, setting direction.
Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): sustaining, persisting, deepening.
Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): adapting, changing, bridging.

Counting your chart

List your Sun, Moon and planets, note the element and modality of each sign, and count. Some astrologers give extra weight to the Sun, Moon and Rising sign. A clear emphasis, say five planets in water, is traditionally read as a strong theme in your temperament.

Soul Atlas reports list this balance in the Western astrology chapter.

A missing element

Having no planets in an element is common and isn't read as a lack. Some astrologers see it as an area you approach consciously rather than instinctively, or one you find in other people. Your Rising sign and house cusps may also bring that element in.
