What Is Your Chart Ruler in Astrology?

Ask an astrologer which planet matters most in your chart and many will say: the one that rules your Rising sign. It's called the chart ruler, and finding it is one of the simplest ways to go a step beyond the big three.

How to find it

Look up your Rising sign, then find the planet that traditionally rules it:

  • Aries and Scorpio: Mars.
  • Taurus and Libra: Venus.
  • Gemini and Virgo: Mercury.
  • Cancer: the Moon.
  • Leo: the Sun.
  • Sagittarius and Pisces: Jupiter.
  • Capricorn and Aquarius: Saturn.

Traditional and modern rulers

Modern astrology also gives Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune. Soul Atlas uses the traditional rulers for the chart ruler, as Hellenistic and Vedic astrology do, because the outer planets move so slowly that they'd be the same for everyone born within years of you.

Reading your chart ruler

Once you know your chart ruler, look at its sign and its house. The sign colours how you pursue life's direction, and the house is often read as an area of life that pulls you strongly. For example, someone with Taurus Rising has Venus as chart ruler; if Venus is in Aquarius in the 10th house, their path may be bound up with community, originality and public life.

Aspects to the chart ruler are also worth noticing, as they describe the planets it works most closely with.

You need a birth time

The chart ruler depends on the Rising sign, which depends on your birth time. Without a time, Soul Atlas doesn't name a chart ruler.

Common questions

What is a chart ruler?
The planet that rules the sign on your Ascendant, traditionally the most important planet in the chart.
Which rulers does Soul Atlas use?
The seven traditional rulers, Sun through Saturn.
My chart ruler is in the 12th house. What does that mean?
The 12th house is traditionally linked with solitude, rest and the inner life, so it's often read as a reflective, inward-facing path. It's not a negative placement.
Is the chart ruler the same as my Sun sign ruler?
Only if your Rising and Sun signs share a ruler. They're usually different.
