The 12 Houses in Astrology, Explained Simply

If the planets are the actors in your chart and the signs are their costumes, the houses are the stage: the areas of life where each part of you shows up. Here is each house in a sentence or two, and a note on how houses are calculated.

How houses are calculated

Houses start from the Rising sign, so they depend on your exact birth time and place. There are many systems for dividing them. Soul Atlas uses whole-sign houses: the entire Rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. It's the oldest system, used in Hellenistic and Vedic astrology, and it works at every latitude.

Other systems, such as Placidus, divide the sky by time and can give houses of very different sizes. If you've seen a different house for a planet elsewhere, a different house system is the usual reason.

Empty houses

With ten planets and twelve houses, every chart has empty houses. An empty house isn't a missing part of your life. Its sign and the planet that rules that sign still describe it.

Angular, succedent and cadent

Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are angular, traditionally the most prominent. Houses 2, 5, 8 and 11 are succedent, linked with stability and resources. Houses 3, 6, 9 and 12 are cadent, linked with learning and transition.

Common questions

Which house system does Soul Atlas use?
Whole-sign houses, counted from the Rising sign, for both Western and Vedic charts.
Why is my planet in a different house on another site?
Most likely a different house system, such as Placidus, or a different birth time.
Can I see my houses without a birth time?
No. Houses depend on the Rising sign, which needs a birth time.
What does a house full of planets mean?
A stellium, three or more planets in one house, is traditionally read as a strong focus on that area of life.
