The 22 Paths of the Tree of Life and Hebrew Letters

Between the ten Sephirot of the Tree of Life run 22 paths, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In the Hermetic tradition each path also carries a Tarot key and an element, planet or zodiac sign. Here's how they fit together, and how to find the path for your Sun sign.

Three kinds of letters

The Sefer Yetzirah divides the 22 letters into three groups: three 'mother' letters (Aleph, Mem, Shin) for the elements air, water and fire; seven 'double' letters for the seven classical planets; and twelve 'simple' letters for the twelve zodiac signs. The Golden Dawn's Liber 777 builds its correspondences on this division.

The zodiac paths

  • Aries: He, path 15, The Emperor.
  • Taurus: Vav, path 16, The Hierophant.
  • Gemini: Zayin, path 17, The Lovers.
  • Cancer: Cheth, path 18, The Chariot.
  • Leo: Teth, path 19, Strength.
  • Virgo: Yod, path 20, The Hermit.
  • Libra: Lamed, path 22, Justice.
  • Scorpio: Nun, path 24, Death.
  • Sagittarius: Samekh, path 25, Temperance.
  • Capricorn: Ayin, path 26, The Devil.
  • Aquarius: Tzaddi, path 28, The Star.
  • Pisces: Qoph, path 29, The Moon.

The planetary paths

The seven double letters belong to the planets: Beth to Mercury (The Magician), Gimel to the Moon (The High Priestess), Daleth to Venus (The Empress), Kaph to Jupiter (Wheel of Fortune), Peh to Mars (The Tower), Resh to the Sun (The Sun) and Tav to Saturn (The Universe).

Why the numbering starts at 11

In this tradition, the ten Sephirot count as paths 1 to 10, so the 22 connecting paths are numbered 11 to 32. Path 11, Aleph, joins Kether to Chokmah; path 32, Tav, joins Yesod to Malkuth.

Other systems, such as the Gra or Lurianic arrangements, place the letters differently. Soul Atlas uses the Golden Dawn arrangement and says so.

Common questions

How many paths are on the Tree of Life?
22 connecting paths, one for each Hebrew letter, plus the ten Sephirot, giving 32 in total.
Which path is my zodiac sign?
Each sign has a simple letter: for example Aries is He (path 15) and Pisces is Qoph (path 29).
Are the Tarot correspondences Jewish?
No. The Tarot attributions are a Hermetic addition, mostly from the Golden Dawn in the late 1800s.
Can I see my paths?
Yes. The free Kabbalistic chart shows the path lit by each planet's sign, and your Rising sign's path when your birth time is known.
