How to Find Your Hebrew Birthday (Sunset Rule)

Your Hebrew birthday is the date in the Hebrew calendar on which you were born. It moves around the civil calendar from year to year, and it depends on a detail most converters ignore: whether you were born before or after sunset.

The day begins at sunset

In the Hebrew calendar, each day runs from sunset to sunset. If you were born at 9pm on a Tuesday, your Hebrew birth date belongs to Wednesday. That's why a correct Hebrew birthday needs your birth time and place, so that sunset at your birthplace can be calculated for that day.

Soul Atlas calculates sunset at your birthplace with an astronomy library and applies the rule. If you were born close to sunset, or don't know your time, it shows both possible dates rather than guessing.

A lunisolar calendar

The Hebrew calendar follows the Moon for its months and the Sun for its years, adding a thirteenth month (Adar I) in seven years out of every nineteen. That's why your Hebrew birthday falls on a different civil date each year, usually within a few weeks of your civil birthday.

Soul Atlas converts dates with the Hebrew calendar built into modern browsers.

In Kabbalistic astrology

The Hebrew month of your birth has traditional associations, including a zodiac sign and a Hebrew letter, and many people like to know their Hebrew birthday for celebrations and reflection. Soul Atlas includes it in your Kabbalistic chart.

Common questions

Why does sunset matter for my Hebrew birthday?
The Hebrew day begins at sunset, so a birth after sunset belongs to the next Hebrew date.
I don't know my birth time. Can I still find it?
Yes. If you don't know whether you were born before or after sunset, Soul Atlas shows both possible dates.
Why does my Hebrew birthday move each year?
The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar, so its dates fall on different civil dates from year to year.
What about a leap year with two Adars?
Customs differ for people born in Adar in a non-leap year; many celebrate in Adar II. Soul Atlas shows the calendar date and leaves the custom to you.
