The 10 Sephirot of the Tree of Life, Explained

The Tree of Life is drawn as ten spheres, the Sephirot (singular Sephirah), connected by 22 paths. Each Sephirah names a quality of the divine in Jewish mysticism, and in the later Hermetic tradition each also carries a planet. Here is each one in turn, following the Golden Dawn correspondences in Liber 777, the tradition Soul Atlas uses.

The ten Sephirot

  • 1 Kether, Crown: unity and pure potential. Hermetic tradition later linked it with Neptune (and the Primum Mobile).
  • 2 Chokmah, Wisdom: the first creative spark. Classically the zodiac; later linked with Uranus.
  • 3 Binah, Understanding: form, structure and time. Saturn.
  • 4 Chesed, Loving-kindness: generosity and expansion. Jupiter.
  • 5 Geburah, Strength (also Severity): discipline and boundaries. Mars.
  • 6 Tiphareth, Beauty: harmony and the heart of the Tree. The Sun.
  • 7 Netzach, Victory: feeling, desire and art. Venus.
  • 8 Hod, Splendour: intellect, language and ritual. Mercury.
  • 9 Yesod, Foundation: dreams and the subconscious. The Moon.
  • 10 Malkuth, Kingdom: the physical world and daily life. The Earth and the four elements.

The three pillars

The Sephirot sit on three vertical pillars. The right-hand Pillar of Mercy holds Chokmah, Chesed and Netzach; the left-hand Pillar of Severity holds Binah, Geburah and Hod; the Middle Pillar of balance runs from Kether through Tiphareth and Yesod to Malkuth. Many modern readings treat the pillars as expansion, form and balance.

Some diagrams also show Da'at (Knowledge), a hidden point between Chokmah and Binah, which isn't counted among the ten.

Jewish and Hermetic Kabbalah

The Sephirot come from Jewish mystical texts such as the Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar. The planetary attributions are later: they belong to Christian and Hermetic Kabbalah, systematised by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century. Soul Atlas follows that Hermetic tradition and says so, because other schools assign things differently.

Reading your planets on the Tree

In a Kabbalistic birth chart, each of your planets is placed on its Sephirah and each zodiac sign on a path. A strong Venus, for instance, points you to Netzach's themes of feeling and art; a prominent Saturn to Binah's structure and understanding. It's a symbolic lens on the chart, not a separate prediction.

Common questions

How many Sephirot are there?
Ten, from Kether (Crown) to Malkuth (Kingdom). Da'at is sometimes drawn but traditionally isn't counted.
Which planet goes with which Sephirah?
In Liber 777: Saturn–Binah, Jupiter–Chesed, Mars–Geburah, Sun–Tiphareth, Venus–Netzach, Mercury–Hod, Moon–Yesod. Uranus and Neptune are later additions; Pluto has no settled place.
Is the Tree of Life Jewish or Hermetic?
The Sephirot come from Jewish mysticism. The astrological and Tarot correspondences are a later Hermetic development.
Can I see my planets on the Tree of Life?
Yes. The free Kabbalistic chart places your planets on their Sephirot and your signs on the 22 paths.
