How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

In Pythagorean numerology, the Life Path number is the most important number in your chart. It comes only from your date of birth, so anyone can calculate it in a minute. Here is the method Soul Atlas uses, a worked example, and a short guide to what each number is traditionally said to describe.

The method, step by step

Reduce the month, the day and the year separately, add the three results, then reduce the total. To reduce a number, add its digits together and repeat until you reach a single digit, except that 11, 22 and 33 are kept as master numbers.

Reducing each part separately, instead of adding every digit at once, is the most common modern method. It occasionally gives a different answer from adding all eight digits together, mainly where master numbers are involved.

A worked example

Take a birth date of 15 June 1990:

  • Month: June is 6.
  • Day: 15 becomes 1 + 5 = 6.
  • Year: 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
  • Total: 6 + 6 + 1 = 13, which reduces to 1 + 3 = 4.
  • Life Path: 4.

What the numbers traditionally describe

  • 1: independence, initiative and new beginnings.
  • 2: partnership, sensitivity and cooperation.
  • 3: expression, creativity and joy.
  • 4: structure, patience and steady building.
  • 5: freedom, change and curiosity.
  • 6: care, responsibility and home.
  • 7: reflection, study and inner wisdom.
  • 8: ambition, effort and material mastery.
  • 9: compassion, idealism and completion.
  • 11, 22 and 33: master numbers, read as heightened versions of 2, 4 and 6, often linked with intuition, vision and service.

How to use it

Treat your Life Path as a theme to reflect on, not a verdict. Ask where in your life you already express its qualities, and where you resist them. Numerology pairs well with astrology: some people find their Life Path echoes their Sun or Rising sign, while others find it shows a quite different side.

Your full numerology chart also includes your Birthday number, your Personal Year (which changes each year) and name numbers calculated from your full birth name.

Common questions

Why don't you reduce 11, 22 and 33?
In the Pythagorean tradition they are master numbers, read as intensified forms of 2, 4 and 6, so they're kept as they are.
I got a different number from another website. Why?
Some calculators add all eight digits at once rather than reducing month, day and year separately. The results usually match but can differ, especially around master numbers.
Do I need my birth time for numerology?
No. Life Path, Birthday and Personal Year numbers use only your date of birth; name numbers use your full birth name.
Is numerology scientific?
No. It's a symbolic tradition, offered for reflection.

Astrology, numerology, Human Design and Kabbalah are symbolic traditions, offered here for reflection and entertainment. Nothing in this guide is a prediction or medical, legal or financial advice. Dates are calculated from planetary positions and given in UTC.
