Mercury Retrograde Explained: What Is Really Happening
Few astrology phrases are as well known as Mercury retrograde, and few cause as much worry. The planet doesn't actually reverse. It only appears to, from where we stand on a moving Earth. Understanding the astronomy takes a lot of the fear out of it and leaves a useful reflective rhythm.

The astronomy: an optical effect
Mercury orbits the Sun much faster than the Earth. About three times a year, as Mercury passes between the Earth and the Sun, it seems to slow down, stop, drift backwards against the background stars for about three weeks, stop again and then resume its usual direction. The moments it seems to stop are called stations.
It is the same effect as overtaking a slower car on a motorway: for a moment, the other car appears to move backwards relative to the hills behind it, even though both of you are going forward.
Mercury retrograde in 2026
Calculated from Mercury's position with the same astronomy library Soul Atlas uses for charts, Mercury's retrograde periods in 2026 fall roughly from late February to about 21 March (in Pisces), from the end of June to about 24 July (in Cancer), and from about 24 October to 13 November (in Scorpio). Exact times depend on your time zone.
The autumn period overlaps with Venus's retrograde in Scorpio and Libra, which ends on 14 November 2026.
What astrologers traditionally associate with it
Mercury is the planet of thinking, speaking, writing, travel and exchange, so its retrograde periods are traditionally read as a time to review rather than launch: to revisit, reread, repair and reconsider. The re- words are a helpful summary.
There's no evidence that phones break or contracts fail more often during these weeks, and Soul Atlas doesn't suggest you cancel plans. What the tradition offers is a rhythm: three times a year, a prompt to slow down and look again.
Gentle ways to work with it
- Finish things before starting new ones: drafts, conversations, half-read books.
- Reread important messages and documents before you send or sign them, which is good practice any time.
- Revisit an old idea or relationship with fresh eyes.
- Notice which house Scorpio falls in your chart: that's the area of life the tradition would say the October–November review touches.
How Mercury retrograde shows up in your own chart
If you were born while Mercury was retrograde, your chart marks Mercury with an R. Many astrologers read this as a mind that likes to process inwardly and return to ideas, rather than any kind of problem. Around a fifth of people are born with Mercury retrograde.
Common questions
- Does Mercury really move backwards?
- No. It's an apparent motion caused by the Earth and Mercury moving at different speeds around the Sun.
- When is the next Mercury retrograde?
- After the period ending 13 November 2026, the next begins in February 2027. Mercury goes retrograde about three times a year.
- Should I avoid signing contracts?
- Soul Atlas doesn't give that kind of advice. Reading carefully before you sign is wise at any time; the tradition simply emphasises it during retrograde weeks.
- What does retrograde Mercury in my birth chart mean?
- It is traditionally read as a reflective, inward-processing style of thinking. It isn't a flaw or a warning.
